I laughed so hard at this. So glad that someone reminded you of the name change coupon; but gosh that was funny.

The true contradiction is that your very own home and work are after the very same goals as this and/or any other business. That is; to ensure the well being of the efforts put forth by the sweat equity of your brow. This is why the attempted politicization of an emotional "epeen" issue falls flat. You live your life exactly and precisely like those you seek to defame the character of.
Mirror mirror on the wall... who exemplifies the greatest contradiction of all? You do.

Posting in a general forum makes the post fair game. You're not a special snowflake and the few who are actually interested in the outdated subscription model psychology that you've already confessed longing for are simply that: an outdated species of gamer. What happened here bespeaks to what is happening (and already has happened) across the MMO landscape. You've lost.
Grow up and get over it.

Another stunning screenshot. Thanks for sharing the awesome idea of framing them.

Why all the fuss over this? The idea more than likely came from players:

    On this forum:

    Or on the international versions:

The idea is neither new; or refreshing. Clearly, there are potential customers already waiting.

The evolution of the MMO industry is big business:
    Arts and Computing Newsletter
The Business Model Influence on MMO Design
The Subscription Transition: MMORPG's and Free-to-Play
Those are older references but as the evolution continues, one finds the implementation of multiple business model layers within any given game. This multifaceted approach is now vital to the survival of a game. As this forum has demostrated its the players themselves who have to cope with this. Some are still in the dark ages of the subscription model mindset and it's equal playing field of supposed "fairness" which is all but gone. There never was any "fairness" because the model favored those who had the time to invest. Regardless of the model(s) being implemented all of it is still a work in progress.

There was nothing "toxic" intended. I was under the assumption that people realized that to the greater degree (for the overall health of this industry) that various releases are timed so as to maximize potential player attendance and potential profitability for each game. One doesn't schedule Bruce Springsteen and the Rolling Stones for the same night in the same town. I'm aware that you're aware of this but BDO (hopefully) won't try to rush Awakenings in an attempt to preemptively grab a few dollars before Legion arrives when they've expressed that they are trying to maximize their release year.
You've got the right idea; it just seems reversed of what might potentially be better overall for BOTH games and the genre. This way the players benefit from a wider scope of diversity in the waxing and waning of procuring player interest.
So relax, go play Legion when it comes out. The lights will still be on at BDO. When Legion wanes refresh familiarity with BDO for Awakenings (or the game of your choosing of course).
Its a win win for diversity in the genre and the customers therein. No one needs to be incentivized to continually play only one game. That, I believe, simply doesn't happen amongst the gaming population for this industry. Instead, one staggers releases in a way that is healthy because players move around.
And yes; I actually do like your avatar.

These boards contradict themselves regularly. You've no sooner posted your thread when another individual has posted their "warning" that the awakenings update "will be the last exciting update in the game". All of these dire predictions and game advice are quite frankly bizarre. You're actually *supposed* to go check out Legion.

In an industry littered with a variety of games and gaming platforms how is this relevant to anything?

Several comments following the article were interesting. A keyword one such commenter used was "formulaic" and this coincides with your "homogenised" concept. I think you're correct with that. Yes, MMO's are stripped down to homogenized formulaic temporary thrill rides. So: players hop, skip, and jump from one to the next. The Steam service is like an amusement park and each game offered is a ride therein.
Whether done purposefully by the industry itself or as a natural consequence of human nature for many, the short-term adrenalin pattern has been set. The only thing that appears to satiate this need is when the the undisputed king of them all (WoW) slaps up another temporary fix with their expansions. People then flock back there in droves, the thrill last for a bit, and afterwards they're back to square one - left with the urge to find another fix.
Its easy to get bored with the rinse and repeat process. That is why I must have some other things to do in a game other than being a Combat Junkie.
Yes, the tactical aspects of BDO's mob AI have been said to be lacking for quite some time now. The mobs are basically punching bags. You can over level the mobs and the combat leveling game becomes a cakewalk form that perspective. Again; this is another reason that there needs to be more to do in these games than just combat.
