    To be fair though, if the players who are actually doing the horse training say one thing, and the players who don't do it say another... it makes things a little clearer, yeah?
    That said, any game mechanic that is boring / tedious / unfun enough to require an AFK option should probably be re-worked or re-factored or something. But! In a game like Black Desert that has so very many different mechanics, they can't all be fun to everyone. How would you even do it in a more engaging way? Luckily I'm not a game designer.
    But if the player who spends 200hrs leveling up horses says that they'd enjoy the game more if a feature was added or changed, it's at least worth considering. Which is what this poll is all about.

    This was answered pretty recently in a Q&A, they removed it because it was added into the Korean game later for new players to be able to catch up. So they felt it wasn't necessary for the NA/EU version right at launch.

    There's actually a financial motivation behind this. You design a game with a time-sink, and then find a way to make sure players keep playing. Adding in ways to play it while you're not playing it is one of those ways. Those positive progression endorphines (or whatever) -- that feeling you get when the game rewards you -- start to fade after a while, especially once players begin to see through the facade, or the novelty wears off or whatever. To keep people spending cash on the game, you keep that feeling going 24/7, or as often as possible. 
    Black Desert is a clever hybrid of the three main game monetization schemes (buy-to-play, pay-to-play, and free-to-play) which they're still tweaking and trying to balance. And it's fun as hell! But don't let that fool you, the goal on their part is to keep you online so you have the opportunity and motivation to spend money on those Pearls.
    And hey, that's not a bad thing. I'm into it! But we should all go into things like this with our eyes wide open, in my opinion.

    There's a lot to be said here about choice, or player agency to be more accurate: giving more ways to accomplish a goal that could be considered tedious or "grindy" or whatever. Perhaps one way is best, putting in the active effort to manually run your horses, for instance (which is already the case, as you run slower when you auto-path). But adding in new methods to achieve that goal just opens up the game mechanic to players who maybe wouldn't have participated before. 
    The earlier idea MrWagoner had, to set up workers to train your horses, for instance, which would be a great thing to have in addition to what we currently see. 
    Ideally, every gameplay mechanic would be as rich and fun and rewarding as the stellar combat we have here in Black Desert... but in lieu of figuring out that one perfect way to make training horses fun for everyone, it's not necessarily a bad idea to make it more accessible to different player styles and personalities.
    I think what a lot of the objectors have said in this thread is very valid, but unless we're being offered the choice to replace the current mechanic with something else, instead of what is actually happening: the offer to add a second way of accomplishing a previously difficult goal... unless they take away the way I like to do it, the only thing I'm really complaining about is how I don't want anyone else to be able to do the thing I like to do, in this one certain way that most folks find kinda boring but I actually really enjoy (for me it's trading).
    I dunno. I will say I think everybody has been really cool and polite in this discussion, which is the first one I've participated in on these forums, so that's really awesome.

    I agree that there are probably better ways to make things like fishing / trading / breeding more fun and enjoyable... but if you enjoy playing the way you're playing, how will the AFK mechanic change anything differently than an increase to the XP? You stated you like being one of the only players training horses... but if they make it easier to do (in any fashion) won't that affect your ranking, either way? Or is it your plan that as long as it's still tedious,even with the added XP, most players won't bother with it? I hope that doesn't sound snarky, just genuinely asking for discussion purposes

    More accurately: "Do we want the game to play itself for others or do we want others to play the game?" Implementing an AFK mechanic doesn't affect your gameplaying ability, only the gameplay of those other players around you. So what you really want here is A) not to feel like you have to use AFK mechanics to keep up, and B) not to have AFK mechanics available to anyone (so you don't feel like you have to use them).
    These are valid feelings to have, but the false choice you've presented above is a just a teeny bit disingenuous, don't you think? I do agree that, with those AFK features available, it's really hard to resist using them.  
    Luckily for me, I'm in favor of them. That was always the thing that kept me playing EVE Online, long after I was bored of it, was seeing my skills build up while I was afk (and offline even). That feeling where I'm gaining levels in things or making money all the time in a game... that's a good feeling. And it keeps people playing (and thus buying Daum coins, potentially) longer than maybe they would otherwise.

    Having worker trainers is a solid idea, but it still would require you to be online... so what's the difference, exactly?
    Love your idea for STR xp to be gained while overencumbered. I spend most of the game at like 104% lol.

    In a game like this with so very many different things to gain XP in, having a few that can be done afk is really nice, especially for those of us who don't have hours and hours every day to play. The cool thing about AFK fishing is that you can set it up and go to work, or sleep, or take your kids somewhere, or whatever your life demands, and when you come back to the game you're enjoying, you have a little bonus waiting there... both in time and money. Likewise, if I only have an hour or two to play, how am I going to level up those skills that require that dedicated effort?
    Could a better, "more fun" mechanic fix that? Maybe... but there's also something to be said for being able to feel that progression even when you aren't able to actually play. 
    And, honestly, is seeing a bunch of people running around in big (or little) circles any different than seeing a hundred people just standing around in town afk? Or fishing? 
    Besides, afk riding / running is already possible (and widely used), this would just make it legitimate.
