Grab cancel in awakening

When I watch warriors play I use to think they could grab with awakening out as you don't actually see the sword/shield come out. Which skills do I need to animation cancel / do so I can use my grab in awakening form basically and revert back to great sword?

Just press "C" after almost any ability or from block and you will swap back and forth. Your grab animation cancels the swap, so you can go Q (block) -> C (weapon swap) -> E (grab) instantly. Perk of being a warrior. :)

One of my guild mates tells me I don't need to stack any critical as all the awakening skills comes with +100% crit. Is this true or is the 100% crit applied afterwards for a few seconds for the next move?

Almost all our skill are 100% critic rate.

critic rate is useless for warrior

after grad you can use C to switch for awakening weapon and start hiting

If the grab fails you usually want to double shield charge the f--- out (facing any possible damage/CC source) and run away with charging thrust.

when grab fails for me sometimes, if desperate, you can use that desync time to try and get off a merciless knock-up. It's risky but it works About 40% of the time, at least for me. It allows you to use grave digger and slashing the dead if it works, then press c during slashing the dead, then charge/shield charge out. I do this if I'm really low on HP, and want to take the risk.  Alrhough If your other stuff is on cooldown it'd be best to just run.

S olar Flare -> Overwhelm -> Slashing of the dead -> Grapple -> Reckless blow + kick cancel -> Grave digging. BIG DAMAGE.

Critical stat on gems is a bad trade-off yeah, but on skill add-on it isn't. The 20% is worth 5 Critical stats already and critting Balance Strike and Overwhelm (and also the odd Pulverize here and there when enemies don't receive down attack bonus) still adds to DPS - the reason I chose Crit over DP on Solar Flare.
