The price of gaming

34 posts in this topic

Since the beginning of video games, VGs cost money. Remember Pong? Pong was 400$ when it was 1st released. After Pong, came systems like Atari and Intellivision. Both of these consoles were over 300$ retail and came with 1 game. After that came Nintendo. Again this console was over 300$ upon release. None of this includes the price of a new game which could be anywhere from 20$-40$. If you wanted a strategy guide for any title it would be another 10-20$. Remember Arcades? A person could easily drop an entire roll of quarters (10$) on Street Fighter 2 in a few hours. Simply put gaming is an expensive hobby. Facebook literally ruined peoples idea of what video gaming is. People started expecting free games ( mostly people 25 and under ). Games shouldn't be free nor have they really ever been free. Remember "Ball"? "Ball" cost $ even. If you wanted to play "Ball" you had to go out and buy a ball. Hobbies aren't cheap, not 1 of them. So next time you feel like complaining about BDO with its 10$ permanent price tag, maybe do some homework on gaming and realize you are getting an absolutely smoking deal for this amazing game.

I hear a lot of people complaining about pearl costs, events, etc.. "Kashkao" is maybe used thousands of times all over these forums. The point is that gaming is expensive. If you want to game as a hobby be prepared to pay 250-300$ for a good gaming experience as all other console gamers have done before you.

TLDR All games have and should have a price, this one has it to, so people should stop complaining because of that.

Anyway, about what you said, it's true that this is a bussiness as any other game. But the way companies sell their games change, and in fact, have changed (That's how the world works). For example, there's the "console games" (This include PC too, ofc.), that maintain the "You want a game, you pay x", but since long time ago appeared other kind of bussiness as the mobile companies, that usually sell their games as "free game, but with mini-trasactions and
advertising inside". MMOs usually are free to play with "mini" transactions, subcribe to play, basically the company sells time in their game, and buy to play, as this one, that includes mini transactions plus a first pay (From 10 euro to 100). People complain about what they feel is not right, and it's not about get free stuff, it's about get something from the company you're taking the effort to support, even if it's a funny event.

The companies have "no reason" (Well, they have, they need people who play their game) to please their players, but they should do it sometimes so people stay playing, bring more people and talk good things about the game to others.
If you feel that they don't care about their game or don't take the effort to please their players, why would you, who are the one who paid, would even care? That ends up having players that leave the game for dumb things like these events.

I remember a time when you could pay $10 to $15 a month to play an MMO and got EVERYTHING in the game for every character

No cash shops

No "convenience" items that you could spend extra money on

No Bullshit, just pay your fee each month and get the whole game, pay a little extra maybe for an expansion too

Yeah, it was good times everybody was equal, there was a hell of a lot less complaining because most were happy

Now we get games that are designed in such ways that suck the fun/efficiency from the game unless you pay up hundreds of $'s for each single character you want to play after you've already spent money on the game.

Maybe the $10 price tag would be a great deal if the game wasn't designed in the way I just mentioned, yes don't forget this game was designed as a free to play, NOT a buy to play to free to play to spend thousands of $'s on making your gameplay enjoyable on all your characters

Clever, he is a Kakao employee, i did not read neither, i am sure about what is he saying... Without reading it...

Funny all these single digit posters glorifying hideous gaming mechanics

The business models always change because there are always those with a fancy credit card that will spend thousands on the game. So they cater to those people.

What exactly is your point? Mine is that 10-250$ is reasonable for a game...what EXACTLY is yours?

wow, next you're gonna tell me about the amazing deal we have on salt nowadays compared to ancient egypt

Salt actually had its highest value around the civil war. Not ancient Egypt. Your metaphor was absolutely terrible in that salt can be found anywhere, and is in fact not a hobby. If you would like to try again since you seem to think you are some sort of smarty pants, feel free. Maybe try something like the price of skateboarding in the early 70's compared to now? Guess what? It's the same price as it was then. How about model rockets? Guess what? Same price as when they came out. Oh and guess what "model rocket" never gave you a damn thing for it's 1 year anniversary of playing "model rocket". "Ball" never gave you a single thing for its 1 year anniversary of you playing ball. I think if you are complaining what it is you need, is a pat on the back from mommy telling you how good you are @ "ball" which is the equivalent of getting anything for your investment in your time spent playing BDO.

I miss playing Nintendo family AND street fighter 2 arcade, talk about epic nostalgia.

Epic nostalgia indeed my friend. Zelda may be the mother of all video game RPGs. Nintendo ah the days.......

Indeed, you're living proof that salt can be found anywhere.

Every new technology costs more at it's early stages. Usually even at it's begining, being very basic it costs way more than the same modified technology, that provides greater functionalities, at a later date. Example: The first cars that had very little equipment and in comparison costed a lot more than cars today that come with loads of features and extra functionalities. This would logically indicate that as time passed the cost would tend to be reduced towards zero. However since technology isn't static and there are a lot of other factors to take into account such as R&D, maintenance, manufacture, investments, market expansion, and even - of course - profit margins what we see is a sort of "stable cost" to every new tech. Meaning, the iphone 7 is as expensive or even more so than the 6 (don't really know if that's exactly the case, I'm only trying to find an example here - there are others). The logic shifted to a sort of "more functionalities or better functionalities but same cost or same range of cost" and of course because people will buy it just because it's new. Companies realised that and just stopped putting effort into it. All they need to do is rebrand, re-color, and it will sell. In video games we've been presented with unfinished and unpolished products that need to be released at certain dates regardless of being full of bugs or not being finished at all. Sometimes they work on them along the game's "life", other times they just don't care and they do loose some people, but it's negligible while compared to the cost benefit of delaying the release - in this case, greater loss. Moreover, in MMO almost, if not all went along with the notion of making the game harder or frsutrating on purpose so you feel compelled to buy things that nullify or atenuate it. Obviously that they tell you these items are a way of helping you perform better as if they had no control over the way the game functions "by default".
Bottom line, the price of BDO is acceptable, but just that acceptable. Personal opinion: better than many other MMO's though, as they cost more along a longer period of time.
