The 6 days review by a new player

Sorry no TL;DR version and this is far from being professionally written.

I might be writing this prematurely, I'm at day 6 of my first week and I just wanted to share some of my impressions of the game, experiences and current things that I like & dislike about it. I've played a decent amount since I started but I try to play more for the sake of having fun and getting immersed in the game, rather then min/maxing everything and making sure I make absolutely no mistakes.

I started off trying most of the different classes to about level 15-20 and decided in the end that I liked the feel of the Musa the most, currently sitting at level 50 and so I will not be talking about awakening or PvP as I don't have enough experience on those topics. I will say that I definitely am mostly a PvE player but I will try and discover more about PvP as it seems to be the higher focus of this game and it seems to have cool elements to it.

Lets start at the beginning, the game has a tutorial and introduction to different elements which is great but I found it odd that there wasn't a "skip tutorial" check box for characters created after that but it is a minor dislike which doesn't matter all that much.

So you go kill some insects, goblins and wolves etc. and I'm thinking "Wow the feel of this game is just amazing, combat is really fun" and this feeling still holds true but my major issue with the combat is the lack of difficulty, monsters have never really posed a threat, including bosses. I find that really sad, I wish monsters would be more dangerous by either giving them faster attacks, abilities like aoe attacks or add areas with more dangerous monsters. In the end the combat is really fun and I get that maybe the real challenge is when you actually get into PvP and have to fight other players but I really hope the PvE from level 1 to 50 and in general can be improved to provide a bit of more a challenge. As it is now you can get to 50 without ever worrying about dying or using a single HP potion.

Immersion... now this is a hard one to properly judge and I will try and mention a good thing and the corresponding bad thing. The world and the visual design of monsters and characters that populate it is in my own opinion really nice but then you get terrible grammar and dialogue from the npc's in the world and it really ends up pulling you out of it as you start wondering "Did they hire Google translator for this?". The graphics are really nice and immersive but then you get this consistent popping of textures, meshes, terrain and models that act really weird if you move around, especially on fast moving mounts.

Cosmetics are generally very cool for male characters and some for females but... sigh, this is going to hit a nerve for some people but the female "armors" are mostly ridiculous, its not like I was surprised by this as I did some research on the game before I played but it gets a mention nonetheless because its obviously directed towards people who rather get their sexual content from a game instead of pornhub. It just feels out of place and a way to sell cosmetics with sex appeal but like I said I knew it existed in the game but I will mention it anyway since it is something I personally don't like about the game from an immersive standpoint, not a political statement.

I won't talk too much about the worker system and crafting etc. as I haven't had too much time to get into that but I like the worker system, its fun to unlock nodes and discover new sites with different resources and so on.

P2W... well I'm just going to steer clear of this subject for the most part, I'll just say based on what I have seen in chat, that people in this game are extremely defensive and seem to have some sort of perception that liking something means you aren't allowed to criticize the things you think are bad about it.

All in all I feel like the game has a lot of flaws, whether it be faulty or inconsistent translations, a cash shop that at least doesn't align with my own ideology for such things, poor optimization and annoying limitations of the game engine... the list goes on with things here and there.

BUT... I really like the game! There is always something you can go do, the world feels like it lives with caravans, bandits, guild battles, sieges, node controls, PvE areas where one faction is battling another, trades, fishing, REALLY fun combat, persistent family account shared progression and the list of good things continue.

So if anyone was to stumble upon this review and still deciding if its a game for them, I would say give it a go and see if the good outweighs the bad.
Also remember I have barely played a week so I'm obviously not going to be as knowledgeable as some veterans or have as much insight into things as others who have gotten a lot further into the game.

From what I have read the game does lack in the department of endgame PvE and if this is true I would love to see the game improving/adding on this in the future. (Calm down! I'm not saying it has to be instanced dungeons or whatever you are imagining in your head and getting ready to slam down on the keys for. And yes the game can improve on PvE regardless of whether it is mainly a PvP game or not.)

Thank you for reading and let me know if you disagree with me on something or everything, I'm interested to hear what kind of player you are (hardcore, casually, crafter, pvp, pve) and what your experiences are!

Hello! Glad to see you're enjoying the game. BDO is really fun!

As to what you said, there are some things I would like to point out:

  • You can skip tutorial after you level one of your characters to 56 (someone correct me if i'm wrong);
  • All grinding areas in BDO are extremely easy to clear with low gear. The only exception is the Valencia (desert) region, where you need about 200+ AP and a lot of DP to clear some areas efficiently. Most mobs aren't a threat, so don't except a real challenge while farming.
  • The translation of the game is bad and there are a lot of graphical bugs related to the UI.
  • As for P2W, there are certainly some items that are way to convenient in the Pearl Shop. However, just remember that everything in BDO is locked behind a RNG wall, which will frustrate you at times.

Where can you buy silver for real money?  Can you please show me?

I think he's referring to the fact that you can buy Pearl Shop items and sell them on the Marketplace, which converts your real money into in-game silver.

I might be wrong but can't you just buy a pet and then sell it on the marketplace? Or any other item that you can sell on the marketplace, it always sells from what I hear? I am assuming thats what he is talking about anyway. If this is correct then you could say "Well you aren't actually buying silver" but at that point you are just arguing semantics.

Hey! I hope the tutorial skip is true because that would be nice. Thanks for the additional information also, look forward to seeing the Valencia Desert!

Yes I know that was probably what he was getting at, even though it's not actually what he said, and it's been proven that doing that is totally uneconomical.

How i prevent my self from reinstalling BDO again.

Remembering that wod had more content

"I started off trying most of the different classes to about level 15-20 and decided in the end that I liked the feel of the Musa the most, currently sitting at level 50 and so I will not be talking about awakening or PvP as I don't have enough experience on those topics. I will say that I definitely am mostly a PvE player but I will try and discover more about PvP as it seems to be the higher focus of this game and it seems to have cool elements to it."

PvP is poorly balanced garbage which favor's what class you are playing/what level you are/how much better gear you have. As for pve, unless you believe that killing the same mobs for weeks or months on end for pitaful amounts of exprience or for a chance for some rng piece of gear to drop, then pve content does not exist. No dungeons or raids exist in this game.

"So you go kill some insects, goblins and wolves etc. and I'm thinking "Wow the feel of this game is just amazing, combat is really fun" and this feeling still holds true but my major issue with the combat is the lack of difficulty, monsters have never really posed a threat, including bosses etc..."

Nothing will really change from what you exprieneced at level one, it will just be mindless grinding untell you hit the soft cap, and then wait untell another expasion and grind mobs for weeks/months on end untell you hit the level cap so you can wait untell another expasion so you can grind against unchallenging mobs to level cap.

In order to have a greater under standing of peoples opinion of P2W, look at revelation online. That game allows players to get all BiS of gear in less than 1 minute, while if you do not pay you will be forced to wait months. For some retarded reason people do not conisder this to be P2W, despite the fact that it clearly is. Now BDO is not as bad as revelation in terms of P2W, but it does have P2W aspects and people defend such pratices just like the revelation fan boys do. Most people will say "BUT HOW ARE THE GAME DEVS GOING TO SUPPORT THEIR GAME WITHOUT MAKING US PAY FOR CERTAIN THINGS HUH?" but they also enjoy ignoring the fact that all of the bad ass looking armor ,slut garments,  bad ass looking horse armor, and housing custimaztion "Only the flooring and wall options are locked by a paywall but BDO purposly locked most of the cool looking custiomaztion furinature behind a payall" are locked a paywall.

I could keep going but this post is long enough. I personally thought this game was very in depth but that was only because i was overwhelmed at first, once i got used to this game after 20-30 hours i realized at how dull and bland it really is. This game is a ocean wide but a inch deep.

And does it matter? You buy pearl item for real money and sell it on marketplace for ingame money. Means you are getting ingame money for real money. It doesn't matter if it's directly buying gold or not. The point is there. It's same like cheating. You didn't get the ingame money by your effort in the game.

You are correct in that you can't make an accurate review on this or any MMO in a week.

I've been playing for just over 2 months and I am still on the fence about making one. You are well within your rights to make a first impression and have fun with it.

While the Peeveepee crew try their best to hijack BDO head to Black Desert Youtube channel and watch any and all the videos. You won't find a minute, 60 seconds of PvP gameplay in all the class trailers, Awakening trailers, expansion trailers combined. There is a very cartoonie one minute video explaining Node war process that was put out 8 months ago with no in game footage involved.

This game is not sold as a PvP game. It's sold as a PvE game.

He said that you can buy your silver "directly" from Daum/Kakao which is in fact false. You don't buy your silver directly from Daum, you buy a pearl item and then sell that for silver, making it indirectly. Added the quote just to show you what he said.

The game IS p2w, you can buy your silver directly from Daum with real money -> p2w.

Anyone show a MMO with that a huge world, streaming not loading, without popups and same graphics quality. Also without any cash shop item at all.

You won't find anything even close to BDO.

It's by FAR the best looking game in this genre out there, it's beyond understanding why you still complain about it. Maybe give something to compare?

Just quit the game then if you don't like it. Why are you even here?

The questing, the amount and complexity of lifeskills, the worker/town setup, name one game that has those?

The action combat, what other game has it? (dont name Tera, this shit you cant even download, check the internet for "tera launcher error" etc).

Guys like you seem really sad, how about going to some psychologist? Playing games is supposed to be fun, if you hate everything about it but still wasting all your spare time on the game, and even join the forums... you're really -----ed up.

If there are no other players the engine is ok.  Get multiple playes on the screen and say hello to desync.  The original darkfall had the best engine bar none. Look up some videos of that.

It looks like absolute shit compared to BDO, don't be ridiculous.

Also, after 1 minute of googling I found sites where I can buy as much Darkfall gold as I want. Imagine this in BDO, people would go INSANE.

I couldn't find anything about professions, workers etc in Darkfall, never played it so can't really compare. It looks like a game from the last century though, so that's surely not something you want to compare in terms of "good graphics engine".

I was asking to show a game that compares to BDO, which means a huge streaming open world (without popups), with same graphics quality, same amount of professions and/or activities besides grinding, and no P2W.

Because those are always the same arguments when people complain about BDO, as if every other game would be so much better.

So in this case I read "Darkfall" and after 2 minutes of googling I see that it looks absolutely shit, is 1000x more P2W than BDO and has not much else to offer.

Next ?

Look up a video of a darkfall siege. There were lag and desync free 200 man battles. BDO is no more than a single player rpg. Sure BDO looks great but it plays like shit and player to player interactions are minimal.

Most of us would gladly give up some waifu for a real game. It's OK that you don't snowflake.

Yes and Quake2 runs at 500 FPS here. Not sure how you want to compare those super shitty graphics, of course that will run better on your old potato CPUs.

Apart from that:

Looks to me like Elder Scrolls 3 and still lagging/desync
