Gear or Skill Based?

Being that I've yet to play this game, for those who have, would this game be considered skill based or gear based? Will the determining factor in PvP be based on the equipment the player is currently wearing or that said players keyboard and mouse skill?

With a game like this, one can only hope for skill.  At the end of the day though, gear will always increase that chance of winning.  I came from ArcheAge where it was heavily gear centered but there were the occasions that having the right class and skill overcame gear differences.

From what i understand it is truly a combination of both. Gear with high enchants seem to give a severe edge over a lower enchants, but in the end i actually think that is kind of cool, as i truly despise the "Guild Wars" way of PvP'ing (ie. create a character and fight with any player from day one).

I like to have to work on my character and feel that people who put in the effort should have an edge, but in the end skill is surely a part of it since the combat system is largely skillbased in itself.

Currently, the gear gap(enchantment) is massive. To answer your question, it's gear based.

And thank god is this way otherwise what would be the point of gear, for pve only? and then on pvp we would just run around naked.

Gear and skill play a equal part, i have defeated players with slightly more gear then me but u jsut cant expect to defeat some one with +18ish gear and you being +1 but if u both have more or less the same gear if u are more skilled u will win.

Don't your hope outweigh the reality of a Korean MMO. If you cannot obtain a near equivalent gear to your opponent (+/-15%), there is no hope xD

EDIT: There are lots of really geared PvErs that could kick a skilled PvPer's butt!

If instead of +1, you said pretty much anywhere between +1 and +16, it would remain accurate. Obviously streamrolling someone with essentially unenchanted gear when you have +18 is expected. But you'll steamroll a whole horde of +15 people as well. Soloing packs of people should be possible through skill, not inevitable due to ridiculous power gaps in gear. If you're excited for grinding billions of silver, and having that be why you beat people in PvP, then yeah. Thank god.

Sure! There is attack and defense scores, and if you are more than 15% under geared (score wise) than your opponent, you will find it difficult to take that person down and they will have a good advantage over you. Does it mean they will win? No, if they are garbage you will still win.

You forgot about levels.

Yes! So true, level plays a role (like any MMO) in being able to land attacks and hitting for decent damage, but gear score is far more important.

are u saying that one +18 pplayer can kill groups of +15 players alone?

And i like to work for my stuff gear/mounts/pets what ever it is, if i have to grind so be it, if i dont have to work for it what's the point? where's the satisfaction in the end. i get that some players liek to have their stuff easy but thats just not the way most mmorpg's work.

(2) +15 players could take down a +18 geared person pretty easily. However, a +18 person will rock a +15 person.

Certain weapons are much better than others. A +15 Liverto is the equivalent to a +13 Julia.

Thanks for explaining,

15% might not look like much but its quite a lot. I give u the example of TERA i played it for almost 3 years and in there 15% is alot, because in games like tera and bdo 15%  flat dmg/def will be multiplied by critical multipliers, for example : in tera like many other games the base crit multiplier is 2x but with the correct build it could go up to almost 10x, if u take thoes 15%x10 you get 150% more dmg (2.5x more dmg on crit from the 15% dmg increase alone).

Tera is also a Korean MMO, so it will be similar to that for gear/skill wise.

That is to be expect (and makes since). Personally i like  it that way.

Let's say that a player with +16 items can't kill a player with +17 items, no matter how skilled he is.

Now you decide, is it skill based?

Most old players wish for this to change.

sry but there is no way that 2 +15 can kill 1 +18 guy... as he can literally 2 shot each of them (and here I mean if they have equivelent item tier liverto/zaka, neil/tarotus, etc...)

Too bad that it doesn't happen.

Maybe 20 players with +15 gear can scratch a player with +18 gear xD

Don't forget that this game had hidden stats that are affected by gear.

A player with +15 gear will do close to no dmg, but on top of that he will also miss more than 50% of this atacks, on a +18 gear player.

I'm still not sure how people don't see someone in full +15/+16 hitting someone in full +18 like wet noodle as a problem. Especially when you have to either be really lucky or spend absurd amounts of money to reach that point making huge gaps of power in the community. When you have an action combat game, and someone can literally stand still as you hit them for a good 30 seconds when you're only a few ranks in enchant levels behind them, yeah, that's a problem in my eyes. That's not even just an advantage for the work you put in the game.

That's just broken.

From what I've read, this game is more gear based, at least in a 1v1 situation. Honestly though, any game with an equipment improving system has to be gear based in some way; it's not like fps games where players have access to the same equipment.

Tera is also a Korean MMO, so it will be similar to that for gear/skill wise.

It's too bad a lot of korean mmo's see gear grinding as a source of revenue

thats just not true, 2 +15 player can kill a +18 if they are skilled enought
