Totem of the Sea

Hey fellow BD fishers,

Since the addition of totems of the sea to the game, I have made it my mission to level and achieve the highest level of totem. However I greatly overestimated how much of a grind this is going to be, especially for the initial levels of the totem. From information I have currently gathered (I assume this data is from the Korean version), there are 6 levels of each totem. With the ability to 'grow' each totem, at the risk of losing EXP or even levels:

http://bddatabase.net/us/item/54205/

http://bddatabase.net/us/item/54209/

http://bddatabase.net/us/item/54213/

http://bddatabase.net/us/item/54217/

http://bddatabase.net/us/item/54221/

This seems like an insane grind, for what you get, that is 0.5%xp per fish of the totem you're using. I haven't given up. However, I have received very little EXP for my efforts. I've been grinding mackerel a fair amount over the past 2 days and received only about 40% xp so far (this is with pro 2 fishing):

iP8Exrl.jpg

I would love to know if we have the exact same totem system as Korea, since very little information is given in the patch notes. Additionally, since I haven't even gained a level yet, I'm wondering if I'm missing something. Am I levelling it up in the intended manner?

@CM_Jouska

I would love someone from Daum to confirm some more details and information for the totem system, since this is beyond the standard grind of any other item I have experienced in the game so far. I've done so much research, even browsing Korean boards and guides, asked many players and still there is little to no information. Some information on the intended method of levelling, and perhaps some information surrounding what happens when you reach 100% EXP (do I have to grow it for it to level?) would be highly appreciated.

OK, after some research I can explain how this works.

In your screenshot you show a "Old Totem of the Sea [Mackerel]"  with this equipped to your boat when you catch a Mackerel your totem will gain a small amount of EXP.  You need to continue to catch the prescribed fish until your totem reaches +80% of its level.  Once at 80% you can then use weapon black stones to try and increase the level of your totem.  Each level adds more bonus features to your totem, and therefor your boat.  Please note that if the upgrade fails your totem may lose some EXP.

@CM_Jouska Does getting more than 80% exp increase its chance of levelling? I know this happens with alchemy stones, but in the totem menu tooltip it doesn't say.

Hope this isn't too stupid of a question, but does this replace the prow I crafted or go on top of everything else?

Wanted to get the answer to this before buying it.

Also if this replaces the Prow, does it upgrade more?  So basically is this making Prows obsolete?

Thanks

Yea, it replaces the prow. It does initially have a slower speed than the prow. The totem is 2% compared to 3% of the fishing prow when you have the fishing equipment set. Fishing prow can be enhanced to: http://bddatabase.net/us/item/49304/ (+10) which gives a total of 8% with equipment, that is the maximum it can reach. The fishing boat prow of abundance (http://bddatabase.net/us/item/49306/), can reach a max of 10% with equipment. The totem can reach 18% with extra benefits too: http://bddatabase.net/us/item/54224/

Hope that clears up your questions.

Thanks so much Fe.

So because the speed bonus is so high when leveled it doesn't matter that you are losing the set bonus of the ship parts.

Plus you get to keep the decoration and container giving that much more LT?

Guess it's time to invest in this and take a pretty big loss on the crafted prow, but man that speed bonus is huge especially for water!

Just note it's extremely time consuming to level up.

--------------------- EDIT ------------------------

Well I just levelled my totem after getting it to 82%~, it successfully levelled but gave me a pretty lame upgrade:

Hrk2TFC.jpg

I was hoping that the xp wouldn't reset, but it does. This seems ridiculous, with there being 5 levels of the speed upgrade, and 3 levels of 'colour' upgrade (green, blue, yellow). Just getting my totem to about 82% took me more than 3 days of non-afk fishing, probably 36 hours total. If you get lucky, you gain a level each time you upgrade - 5 times of getting 80%+ xp, that's 36*5 = 180 hours MINIMUM. And that's not accounting for failures, and being as lucky as you can possibly be with the upgrades.

This seems pretty insane. @CM_Jouska any input on this, will this receive any changes?

It's called a stretch goal.

Think of it as a gear grind for fishermen. Would you complain about spending 180 hours +15ing your weapon and armor?

Only issue is, that I could go and try to +10 enchant the regular fishing boat prow (no requirements for this) which would net me 8% move speed increase. The totem gives a maximum of 18% speed increase and requires master 1 fishing and the huge investment of time. 180 hours is a lot of time, at around 8 hours a day that's 22 days of fishing mackerel only (or whatever fish you chose). I wouldn't consider it quite the same usefulness as upgrading armour and weapons.

Well then fishing totems aren't for you, just like most people aren't going to invest in making/leveling Alchemy Stones. Stones/Totems long-term projects that may not make much sense for the average player to invest a lot of time in now, as there is a ton of other fresh content to do.

You don't think roughly 20% movement speed is useful? Then it does not sound like you have been sailing that much.. It's so horrificly slow and while you may notget that boost to begin with - it is still going to matter over time..

Instead of thinking.. Crap I have to do this xx hours for xx days to max it - then think it as an ample opportunity to a) get more fish titles and b) grey fish for feed.

So what's peoples opinions on which one to get?

I would like to get one pretty soon, but am stuck on which one to get.  Any of these white fish come from any of the blue/ gold spots? None of the spots I found does any of the four fish related to these totems.

Thanks for any help in this

Tbh i would advise amberjack/mackerel they are the most common greens on goldspots, if you're more into bluespots its a bit more hazardous

I did Mackerel, just because you can catch it on the docks at Velia. Unfortunately, I haven't found any green hotspots along the shore (only place you seem to catch Mackerel)

It's essentially a 10% speed boost extra you get for a totem over the standard enchanted prow. And yes I know sailing, fishing is all I do. Also for spots for the totems, you don't catch grey fish. If you do, you should probably change spots or your going to be there for the rest of your life haha.

Any spots for amberjack that you know of?  Thanks

so looks like I am able to catch amberjack pretty consistently at the hot spot north of veila, west of crons castle.

The spot is exhausted, but it's the only spot I can catch amberjacks.  It's also got sardines.  So those are the only 2 greens I have been catching at this spot.

Wish I could find an abundant spot for them though lol

You have NO idea how lucky you are.

My friend and I are doing this, and he has tried upgrading it 4 times now. Once at 120%, once at 105%, once at 83% and once at 150%. Every time the exp has dropped by 50% with no upgrade.

I've attempted it once at 80%.

It's called a stretch goal.

Yeah, the only difference is, while you're doing that goal you don't have to stand in a field and kill only grass beetles for that amount of time.

So I've since gotten my Totem to yellow rarity—2% movement speed, +150 LT, 2% turn, 2% acceleration—but haven't seen any increases in speed on the level of those linked in the OP. Do they exist? Or have I capped the totem?

The Speed buff is dependent on the level of the totem not the quality i.e. white, green, blue, yellow, which increases the other buffs.
It's possible yo gained quality but not level i.e it is still an Old Totem of the Sea, Not Plain > Hard > Refined etc. which is the level that dictates speed.
For example, even white Plain Totem of the Sea gives +4 speed buff.

Check your version and then the database should tell you which it is and what buff it should have. I have seen a Plain green quality one with +4 speed so it seems to work,

And given how old this info is not and the new way they level it may be better to make a new thread to avoid confusions.

Yeah, ive failed 6x in a row for the initial upgrade of the Old totem bought from Crio in velia.

At least it doesn't make us weaker when it fails.
